The Media Civics Lab Program

The Media Civics Lab is a hyperlocalized, multi-stakeholder approach to equipping Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials with crucial fact-checking and media literacy and information skills and resources so they can be good ambassadors online and create a localized media education training in their respective communities.

Amidst the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the world faces an “infodemic” or information pandemic. This calls for a more calibrated response to critical thinking on a grassroots level. Engaging the Philippine youth who will champion media and information literacy (MIL) has never been this important.

The 4 main activities of the lab are the following:

  • Creation of a Learning Resource for Media Literacy and Awareness
  • Comprehensive Online Training with live classes and webinars to develop the next breed of media literacy champions in the Philippines
  • Seminar-Workshop series to engage SK leaders to help fight the spread of fake news in the time of COVID-19
  • Grants Competition and Community Mobilization through seminar workshops and projects

The four main themes covered in the Media Civics Lab program are responsible digital citizenship, media literacy, fake news and disinformation, and discernment and empowerment.
